The Work

The traditional French children’s game “1, 2, 3, Soleil” alternates between standing still and madly running. One player faces a wall and counts “1, 2, 3, Sunshine”, hitting the wall with each word and turning quickly when “Sunshine” is called. The others must freeze. The first to get to the wall while the counter isn’t looking takes over and the others go back to the start.
This book revisits the game and everything soon gets mixed up in wild extravagance where the counter becomes the Inca Sun God himself. Starting quietly, the illustrationsfollow the madness as it unfolds and they take us along in a joyful carnival of letters and colours.
